Sticky-Blue was the name for a Boy Bugler. Rowe joined up in 1941 aged 13. Training is engagingly described and a year later he joined Howe, where he spent the rest of the war serving from the Arctic to the Pacific, via Operation HUSKY and the surrender of the Italian Fleet, finishing as a hardened regular aged 17.
