Wentzel was rescued in October 1940 when U 32 was sunk in the Atlantic. He escaped from his British camp with Von Werra but the two were recaptured and sent to Canada where they repeatedly tried to escape – successfully in Von Werra's case. |

A readable but lurid memoir. Werner first sailed in May 1941 in U 557, became second-in-command of U 612 in 1942 and later moved to U 230. In April 1944 he took command of U 415 and in August 1944 of U 953. He was one of the few men of the U-Boat Command to survive a full war career. |
