An introduction by the author is followed by a personal account of life in 1940 by Roy Bennett. This is followed by the official account of the experiences of the BEF in 1939-40 as reported in official despatches printed in the London Gazette, namely: 35305 (Lord Gort’s two despatches on the land forces in 1939-40); 37573 (Alan Brooke’s Despatch on the BEF left in France after Dunkirk) and 37719 (Dowding’s Despatch covering the Battle of Britain).

An entertaining collection of stories and reminiscences brought together by the well-known historian Norman Franks. A member of the RAFVR, Foster was called up in September 1939. By September 1940 he was in the thick of the fighting over southern England. After a spell as an instructor his squadron went to Darwin and took part in its defence throughout 1943, flying the first Spitfire to down a Japanese aircraft. He returned to the UK in 1944 and served in a RAF public relations unit and administrative posts until his demob in 1947.

LANCE, Kate. Redbill: From Pearls to Peace – the Life and Times of a Remarkable Lugger. 399p., bibliog., illus., index. Fremantle: Fremantle Arts Centre Press, 2004. ISBN: 1920731423.

An award-winning ship biography. Built in 1903, Redbill sailed first as a pearler. When war came to the Pacific, she was there as the first bombs fell on Darwin and she was commissioned and was used with other luggers until laid up as a hulk as the war moved on. After the war she had a busy career from carrying cargo for missionaries to working with Greenpeace against French nuclear testing.

Born in 1886, he went to sea aged twelve. He saw service in both world wars on Irish Sea ferries and was on the RMS Scotia at Dunkirk, where he won a DSC. The book is based on his recorded recollections.
