Fortunes of War briefly lists the war service of merchant ships chronicled in Vol. 14 of the Marine Observer for 1937, plus descriptions of three wartime voyages made by a friend, Douglas Cameron. The final volume, Mined Coasts, is a list of British merchant ships damaged or sunk by mines, with brief details of the circumstances. |

Some forty-two Empire Flying Boats were built for Imperial Airways and this is their story. Almost 100 pages cover their war service. Rather like the Merchant Navy, they served in all theatres and suffered heavy casualties. There is also a brief account of how these developed into the Sunderland flying boat. A fascinating and well told tale. |

The author left his ship in the Far East to join the Free French forces. He reached England in 1941 and took command of the depot ship Courbet. When she was laid up, he took command of the First French Naval Air Squadron which fitted out with Spitfires and was operational in the South of England. He moved briefly to night-fighters before taking command of the sloop Savorgnan de Brazza in late 1942. The book ends with the sloop’s first voyage to Gibraltar, but a publisher’s note describes the rest of his career |

This very good history of the Medical Branch is focussed on public and occupational health issues rather than the treatment of casualties. Ships, and especially submarines, were unhealthy spaces and major concerns were then the treatment of illnesses as varied as tuberculosis, mental health and venereal disease. A fascinating study. |
