Pictures taken from an unpublished album belonged to a member of the crew. They show every aspect of life aboard before, during and after a typical mission into the Atlantic, including some of the sinking of Allied shipping and the rescue of their crews.

Some 300 well reproduced photographs offer a largely American perspective on the landings. There are good tabular lists of aircraft and shipping losses.

Completed in 1916, the yard closed in 1925, reopening in 1938 when relations with Germany began to deteriorate again and serving throughout the Second World War where it was a major base. A well illustrated brief account.
