After training he was seconded to the RAF 252 Squadron in late 1940 where he flew Beaufighters. The squadron soon moved to Malta the Crete then Egypt where he was shot down. After almost six months in hospital he was sent to South Africa to recover before returning to the UK. He then returned to active service in Malta with 828/830 Squadron on night operations. Rising to command the squadron. In mid-1943 he was shot down over the Sicilian coast. After six days in a dinghy he was rescued by a German ship. He was transferred to Stalag Luft III as a POW and was imprisoned for the rest of the war. |
