Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1996, xiii, 434 pp. Good survey except nothing on intelligence; early 17th century, accumulated large empire; 1941-1942, it vanished; conclusion: diplomacy, bluff & hope plus comforting sense of racial superiority buttressed by myths racism spawns.
