A comprehensive and lavishly produced work which went through several impressions. It includes many designs which never left the drawing board. Gives details of each occasion when ships saw action. An excellent work.

Roskill served on Warspite and this full history covers her entire career which envelops almost the entire gamut of Royal Navy experience for half a century. She saw action from Jutland to Walcheren via Narvik and Matapan and witnessed the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in 1918 and the Italian Fleet in 1943. The author packs a great deal into a relatively small space.

The author's usual mix of fact and reminiscence, concentrating on WWII. Apart from Royal Oak, sunk in 1939, they all saw active and arduous service but survived the war. A routine, workmanlike study.

The imaginative use of oral history is deployed to create a picture of what like was like on the Atlantic corvettes. Some sets of reminiscences are skilfully woven together.
