Shortly after the invasion of Sicily Churchill ordered the occupation of the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean. The Long Range Desert Group, retraining in Lebanon, were now part of Raiding Forces, Middle East, along with the Special Boat Service and No 30 Commando. The LRDG landed on Leros establishing observation posts, reporting movement of enemy shipping and aircraft and fought bitter battles in the area until the end of 1943.

A well judged and balanced account of Britain’s and Churchill’s darkest hour. It was the year that saw the fall of Singapore and Hong Kong, huge losses in the Atlantic, losses in North Africa and the siege of Malta as well as the Channel Dash. The author uses a wide range of records from official records to personal recollections to paint an excellent picture of the path from disaster to victory.

A distinguished soldier turned author gives an excellent account of the service of the 15th Motor Gunboat Flotilla. Based in Dartmouth it specialised in ferrying secret agents to and from Brittany. Uses an extensive range of official documents such as SOE files and private papers as well as published and on-line sources.

A well written authorised biography of a distinguished Australian admiral. A country boy from the Hunter Valley he went to the Royal Australian Naval College aged 13 as a cadet midshipman in 1937. On graduation he joined Repulse and was with her for the Bismarck hunt then survived her sinking off Malaya in 1941. He continued to see active service in the Pacific War and was awarded a DSC while serving on Shropshire and was in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered formally. His distinguished career continued post-war until his retirement in 1980. A well written and empathetic biography.
