The story of Landing Craft Headquarters (LCH) 185, which led the assault on Sword Beach but was sunk by a mine on 25th June 1944. A chance meeting between the author (an archaeologist) and Patrick Thomas, one of the few survivors, at a D-Day commemoration in 2016 led to a hunt for the wreck of the LCH. The story jumps backward and forward between the story of the landing craft’s war service, Thomas’s wartime service in the RN and the ultimately  successful hunt for the wreck.

The story of the Royal Navy Volunteer Supplementary Reserve. Almost two thousand amateur sailors signed up to the Reserve as war loomed. The author discovered her father’s papers in the attic and they told of his service in this very mixed group. They served in everything from minesweeping to Ian Fleming’s Commandos and the author brings their hugely varied service to life.

He joined the RN as an Ordinary Seaman in 1941 and saw active service from the Arctic to the Indian Ocean. This gave the background to his hugely successful literary career starting with the incomparable novel HMS Ulysses. Approximately half the book covers his wartime service while the second half covers his literary success and later life.
